About The Trust

History

In March 1933 a Percy Brand conveyed the freehold of the land and the building thereon to 5 persons appointed as Trustees of the Clacton Brotherhood. At that time, the day to day running of the premises was the responsibility of a Committee of Management, acting under the control of the Trustees. When the Trustees registered the Trust with the Charity Commission in 1996, the Charity Commission stated that there should be 5co-opted Trustees and also one ex-Officio Trustee, that person being the General Secretary of the Brotherhood and Sisterhood Incorporated.

Originally the main use of the building was as a place of religious worship by local men, not women in those days. Services were held regularly on a Sunday afternoon. It is believed that during World War II, the building was used as a YMCA, & since then it has been the home of its own orchestra, its own mail voice choir, a table tennis club which still exists, the Clacton Tow Silver Band, and over the years many other groups. There have been extensive alterations to the premises over the years. For many years what is now room 2 housed two snooker tables, and the small room which is now the home of the Railway Enthusiasts was the band room.

Brotherhood Hall Newsletter No. 7 October 2019

Hi everyone, I hope you all had a wonderful summer, the weather was great wasn’t it. I have to apologise to you all because I have just realised I haven’t done a newsletter since 2018!!!! How the time flies!!

The hall continues to be a busy one, we have had a few hirers come and go for a variety of reasons, but mainly the lack of uptake from the public for the different classes! It’s a shame that some don’t take off, but you regulars seem to be doing very well!! There are still a few regular slots we can offer so if anyone needs anything, always call me and we can see if there is anything we can do.

Can I remind everyone again that you should be emptying the bins from your room at the end of your hired session and ensuring the floor and tables are clean and tables and chairs are stacked so it is ready for the next hirer. We have had a couple of complaints recently regarding the floors, please make sure you leave the hall as you wish to find it, but I stress, if there is a problem, please call me and I will do my utmost to rectify it.

We had the outside painted during the summer and I am pleased with how it looks, I am now trying to get the tape and notices off of the doors, but it is not an easy task as cellotape sticks to the plastic well and truly, so please can you refrain from using it.

It has been brought to my attention that there are a lot of cigarette butts outside the side door! Please can you ask your people to put their butts in the container on the wall and not the floor, this just makes for another job to clear up!

The heating has now been turned on for all of you with the exception of just a few that didn’t want it yet, so if you are feeling the need for heat and are in that group, just let us know and we will turn it on.

The Christmas holidays are fast approaching so if you could let me know of any dates you won’t be using I would appreciate it. Have a great Christmas and New Year

Lyn, Administrator
